I have always thought it probably doesn’t matter, but does it?–How do the fibers respond to ‘extended’ storage?

Long term storage? Best to put it in an airtight bag, suck the air out, and store it out of the sun in a dark, cool place.

Ozone and UV are really what degrades nylon. I wouldn’t think a loose bend would have that much effect. Still, I’d probably pack it with loose coils.

Most important is dry and out of the way of sunlight. And away from batteries and clorox which might outgas and cause problems.

The material will take a set, and might be best to store in big, loose-ish coils rather than tightly and sharply bent. But this is a handling issue, not a damage issue.

UV blows out the dye from nylon and polyester fairly quickly, but effects the actual functional fibers somewhat less. Damage done can be found by inspection.

Regular, careful and judicious inspection of ropes and other technical gear will improve the safety of your canyon travel.

Excellent Craig! I’ll write you on the side… Of course I remember you from SandCamp earlier this season! Pen and I still laugh about your “Don’t worry, this isn’t weed.” statement when you pulled out some kind of tobacco substitute and some rolling papers. Dave

Has the rope been sitting out in the UV for over a month? Would this matter? Was it in an obscure place or did folks just walk by it for a month? Where exactly was it? Glad it has been found. R
