FRS vs Ham Radio

But Family Radio does not have a specific monitoring channel that I am aware of (unlike marine VHF)- so how is that of any help?

FRS has millions of radios out in public and lots of people using them outdoors hiking, climbing and canyoneering.

FRS channel , tone 0 (no tone) is a good place to start, but I’d never count on anybody listening at all.

You’re just playing the odds and frankly they aren’t good even in the best scenario. Generally you’re much better off with a Satphone if you really need to call for help.

Now if you’re around the misnamed- Lake (Reservoir) Powell I hear Marine 16 is a good bet for emergency communications. But away from the pond and ocean, zippo.
