Fwd: Radio Advice – gear heads

WOW! I was in Wal-Mart last night looking at FRS radios and noticed a big change in the units displayed. Most of them were about 30% smaller than the smallest one I’d ever seen before. And…cheap! The most expensive setup was $39.00 (for a pair – not just one) and included rechargeable battery packs and a nice “drop in” desktop charger. I think it even had earbuds, but can’t remember. There was one for $8.88 and even a pair of Motorolas for $16.00 a pair (that’s right). Wonder what happened?

My natural instinct is to stay with the Motorola Talkabout line just because they fit the budget and seem to be well built. the T5820’s cost about $100 for the pair and look like really nice feature rich radios that will do FRS @ .5 and 1 watt channels as well as GMRS channels. They will be used for basic communications while on outings to help coordinate our groups.

Does anyone have any thoughts, advice? Are these $99 dollar radios over kill for what I need?
