Seen more and more. Worries me and more for the fact…..chipped > holes in sandstone, as an anchor is not safe, but almost everyone > agrees with that so… >
Where ya seeing g-pick holes? I have seen G-pick holes in Music and Maidenwater, as well as the Monkey Business pothole. The Music/Maidenwater ones were unsightly, but created several years ago. If new ones are cropping up, I must be in the wrong canyons, or am missing them.
I’d like to get back to Maidenwater or Music sometime to see how much they have weathered since I first saw them. I have to wonder how much time is needed before they are reclaimed by erosion. The maidenwater ones I saw were 4 or 5 years ago.

At the risk of being seen as grumpy or Kelsey bashing, these chopped holes are on the ledge, on the left, looking down canyon. Out of the watercourse, they have little chance of fading/eroding away for quite a while. Buuuut, MK told me he goes out alone a lot, so it is OK to chop holes, for his safety. Rant over. R

Sorry to bring up this dead horse, but recently returned from the Butler forks and it reminded me of this thread. Saw two g-pick holes (Kelsey placed them) at the first rappel in Butler main fork. We sequenced down it. Someone else did a less than vertical rap or handline off of a small-ish bush. FWIW.

All I can recall is that it’s right at the first “mandatory” rappel. > It’s a fairly short drop with a pinchy start – about 10 to 15 feet > into a small pool. OK, I got it now. You said EF and meant WF. We call the drop Friendly Falls and yes that is the one we fix for the trip up WF on the Righty/Left Combo platter. Are you sure the arch is gone? It has been known to get buried under 3-4 inches of dirt. Hope no one was tied to it, if it did go bye bye. What a great canyon! Love the place. R

Ram,
Man, oh man. How is it possible that you have every boulder, chockstone and ledge of every canyon memorized? It never ceases to amaze me…
All I can recall is that it’s right at the first “mandatory” rappel. It’s a fairly short drop with a pinchy start – about 10 to 15 feet into a small pool. There once was a very small arch (now gone) right at the lip of the drop that could be slung. I’m pretty sure it’s the drop you fix a rope at when doing the West/East combo.

I can’t find an artifact to save my life. You can’t find holes. Hey Matt, is that at the rap, just past the big boulder and over a chockstone to a ledge, with a lower angle finish?

Your winning big points there, Ryan

You too. Your total “days out” tally is impressive, adding the trips to the weekend, after weekend forays. You have had as busy a year as anyone I have seen in recent memory. Say hi to our common friends and I will do the same

Good news. As of the 18th of September, the Roost was it great shape up past Texas Hill. Go Speed racer, Go!!

There’s a pretty significant hole at the first rap in EF Cheese, left side LDC.

Quite a few in Imlay. Still there a couple years later.

There are holes in there from is first trip. He used no g pick when he was with Steve and I when we went all the way through.
I heard Imlay, but I haven’t seen those.
I know someone is putting Moki steps in the Powell canyons and Escalante, but it’s not relate to MK. I don’t know who’s doing it. Was a lot of bolting going on there too.

Hi Ryan I haven’t seen the Music ones in a long time, but the Monkey Biz and Maiden ones still stand out. Ones I have seen…3 in Cheesebox and 1 in Hideout. One in Upper Cottonwood and another I saw when I was with you in the Wingate narrows of Lower Stair, but we had other things on our mind, like swimming nude on the coldest canyon day I have ever experienced. Remember that? 😉 We warmed up in 5 minutes though! There is also the ugly series of chunks cut out on the Not and Mindbender exits. I have heard from others, but can’t confirm holes in Sam’s Mesa, Upper Iron Wash and the 3rd hole of the tech section of Quandary. Your right though, given time, the rock around them will erode to the same level or so it seems. anyone else note holes elsewhere or can confirm some of these? R
