Thinking about a GPS this Christmas. Just wondered if anyone had anything to say about the Garmin Rhino. I no that it’s been advertised for a long time, but nobody has had them in stock. I noticed last week that REI finally got them.
I wouldn’t buy two, so the feature to send locations back in forth is of no use to me. But beyond that, seems like a good idea to combine your GPS and FRS together in a semi waterproof case. Less to carry. The cost doesn’t much more than buying a GPS and a FRS seperate either.
Feedback appreciated, thanks.

IMHO The Rino is destined to be the communication device of choice for many outdoor folks. Waterproof is limited to a few feet but for wet canyons, that’s ideal. GPS is nothing new except the pier to pier positioning is the patented rage. . You can talk with anyone who has a FRS and if you pay the $ 75.00 to the FCC, you can turn on the GMRS which has a longer range but no beam me back Scotty feature. It has it’s own computer map program, which may = more $$$ I use MapTech which does not have a driver for the Rino yet. Luckly one of the existing MapTech drivers allowed MapTech and my Rino to exchange data. YMMV. My old eTrex computer cable didn’t work = more $$$ My old VOX twin pin head set for my Motorola didnt work, so hands free = more $$$ For me, a sometimes wet canyoneer, kayaker etc, it should be the ticket, or my wife will kill me. I intend to put it throught the paces over the holidays, and will report. Don’t worry there will be plenty of other people in the field to speak with on Rinos. Best regards, Dick Shear
