I went to Black Diamond yesterday to check out those Imlay Gear packs. I’m thinking about buying the Kolob. Was wondering if any of you out there have used them and could provide me with an objective opinion. I am not too sure about the mesh on the sides. Seems like the first place to fail.
Any thoughts?

My Imlay Gear Kolob pack has been subject to consistent abuse yet has held up admirably. It’s a rugged pack that should last you a long time. Yes – I’ve got a couple of tears in the mesh but its not an issue. And besides being durable, it’s very comfortable – even when packed with heavy hardware and wet rope. Highly recommended.

A few weeks ago I posted a subjective review of the Heaps pack on this site in the “Technical Info” subfolder of the “File” folder. Short answer: very pleased with the pack. Chris.

Company Line: the mesh is a bit less durable than 1000d Cordura, but not much. I took one through North Wash narrow canyons this spring, just to tear it up. Some small holes in the mesh. But they don’t run. The pack has been through a bunch of canyons and is still working just fine, though it looks a bit thrashed.
I tried fixing the mesh holes with Aquaseal, and this did not work at all. Can be repaired with a sewing machine, but that is a pain.
I’d recommend against taking it through narrow canyons that are hard on packs. You are paying extra for a specialized pack – use it where it does the most good – in wet canyons. I have a bunch of old packs I bring down to North Wash, except when I am gear testing.

James,
I’ve been using both the Mystery and Rope Silo this past year. Great packs!
Gotta have the mesh for the pack to drain well. Seems to be holding up pretty well so far.

That was my worry about the Imlay Silo I bought, but I’ve had the bag out in a bunch of harsh canyons and the mesh is holding up very well.
