I’ve been using a Myo 5 lately. This headlamp is really a pretty good combo of LED and Halogen. Although not as small as a Tikka it’s still reasonably light and compact.

Looked at the BD Zenix a few days ago. Yes, bright and light weight. Not keen on those odd batteries (I think they’re an N style – used in 35mm camereras, etc.). Yes, those batteries pack more charge than AAA, but will you be able to find them out in the sticks?
I’m happy with my old Petzl Tikka – not perfect but it works. If I were buying now I’d go for the Petzl Myo 5.

Went hiking last Sun nite, took my moonlight, zipka and new zenix; little 3rd and 4th class scramble to the top of red mountain in Ivins, in short the zenix was substantially brighter than either of the other 2, but your right; at the expense of much greater battery consumption.

I have a combo headlight (Princeton Tech) but I find myself just using the LED lights…as, for some reason, I seem to prefer that white light more…

The Zenix Headlamp is the first all-LED headlamp to introduce “HyperBright” LED technology. These “HyperBright” LEDs are compact, incredibly energy efficient and provide five times more light than traditional LEDs. Their energy efficiency results in a reduced environmental impact, because battery changes are less frequent and LEDs never need to be replaced. We’ve designed the Zenix Headlamp to generate an intense, focused beam of LED light—a beam that rivals that of lower-wattage xenon bulbs. This lamp incorporates a “lensed” Hyperbright LED that is flanked on each side by a SuperBright LED; a switch allows the user to toggle between the SuperBright LEDs for proximity illumination and the lensed HyperBright LED for beam-throwing light. Unlike xenon bulbs, LEDs never need to be replaced. Waterproof to IPX standards and weighing a mere 90 grams, the Zenix sets a new standard in backcountry hands- free lighting. A great option for the user who wants an energy efficient, beam-projecting headlamp. Approximate burn time of 12-15 hours at full strength, and 140 hours on two SuperBright LEDs. Reengineered battery pack holds 3 AAA batteries.
Weights: Without batteries: 90 g With batteries: 125 g
Hyperbright LEDs provide 5 times the light of traditional LEDs, equal to a longlife xenon bulb First lamp to use lensed and focused LED technology Three LEDs total: two Superbright LEDs, one lensed Hyperbright LED Intense, focused LED light beam and proximity lighting in one unit

When Petzl came out with the Tikka I started carrying it exclusively. Small and light-weight. I didn’t really have any complaints until last summer when I kept walking off a faint trail. My buddy Hank kept getting us back on track with a real bright halogen something or other, I think it was a Surefire. I still carry the Tikka but now also have a Myo 3. The LED’s are great for around camp and following a good trail and I can switch on the halogen for when I really want the light to reach out there.

I have a Petzl Myo 3 and Duobelt 5 LED. The Duo is a bit heavy, but super bright – my guess is the Myo 5 has similar brightness. I love the Myo 3; LED light is plenty for camp and most night hiking. I’ve had it about 4 months and haven’t changed the batteries yet (alkaline). Myo 5 has some power-saving features in addition to 2 more LEDs.
I have a couple friends with the old Gemini (only 1 LED – new one has 2) and it isn’t bright enough for their liking. (it was until they borrowed my duo5
hope that helps,

The xenon will be brighter and give a true color view. It will eat batteries too. It’s a nice option if need an intense light. For near work, the LEDs are great and efficient. Color tends to be off.
There are some LEDs, the Luxeon Stars that put out some serious oomph. I don’t know of a head lamp using these LEDs yet. They’re a bit power hungry too. For most of my purposes, an inexpensive LED headlamp is the most useful. For occasional high output such as dark route finding, I carry an ARC LS (uses the Luxeon Star LED) with the 2AA tailpiece (also can run on single CR123), but it’s expensive.

I’ve got an old school Petzl zoom thats about 10 years old. It still works and i’m using the same Xenon bulb that I bought 10 years ago. Its got really great light up to a hundred feet away but the battery life at this stage is only a couple hours. It uses 3 double A batteries and I think I paid $56.00 for it back in the day. I’ve also got a new Petl Zipka with 3 LED bulbs and takes 2 tripple A batteries. Its good for real close distance and walking in the dark but you really can’t see anything more than about 10 feet away. Battery life is supposed to be a couple hundred hours. It is very small and lightweight. I think I paid $36.00 for this one but I’m not very happy with it. I like to see whats around me. When I buy a new headlamp next spring I’m going to make sure its got both a Xenon buld and LED bulbs so I have the best of both worlds.
