After four years of painstaking work, and occasionally some heart-thumping escapades, Todd Martin shares his experience as the first person to systematically explore the technical canyons buried deep within the Grand Canyon. His recently published book, Grand Canyoneering (available at the talk) is the first extensive guidebook covering technical canyoneering in Grand Canyon National Park. The 500 full-color pages highlight 117 drainages, from Waterholes Canyon upstream of Lee’s Ferry all the way down to Tincanebitts Canyon at river mile 264.

Come hear Todd describe his incredible explorations of these magical places. As an added bonus, following Todd’s illustrated talk local stereographer John Hart will present a short program of images on adventuring inside big ditch, in 3D!

$3 at the door.

Show was fantastic. The 3D show had some of the coolest GC images I have ever seen. Nice to see lots of folks in a different context too. Amazing how different we look when clean, shaved and dressed like civilians! Honestly, lots of friends that I have never seen in the civilized world. The show certainly added another level to my inspiration to get back in that ditch and play. It’s been too long. — In Yahoo Canyons Group, “RAM” wrote:

Amy made a great save on a breakaway in the 51st minute, as her high school team scored twice late to win 2-0. Their soccer team remained undefeated (5-0) and untied for the season. 😉

more giggles and murmurs from the back of the room and the calm explanation that the quarter sized rock perfectly fit the crack to secure the webbing as does a pile of rocks was a nice touch.

    no really it works

Yeah, big river, little pool toys. I will tell ya…..Hit an eddy wall, which lookas like nothing and the boat gets instantly swamped, which actually stabilizes the things. Crazy nutzoid stuff. Thanks for the post. > R >

It was fun although we missed the 3D portion to get some dinner and beers at the Sun before it got too late and the blood sugar too low.

It was a pretty full house, had to be over 100 people there. Started with brief overview, history and then moved into exploring off the beaten path and the challenges of exploring the Grand Canyon in general and from a canyoneering perspective.

The pictures were awesome along with the narration.

The geologic diversity was unbelieveable. Some of the rapels were just cool and some off the hook. I think one of the slides was a 675′ rapel. Good thing they found a ledge to rerig at 400′ or so. There was a couple slides on the different natural canyoneering anchors with some priceless audience reactions along with commentary on no bolt policies in the canyon and trying to not use bolts in general unless natural anchors are not possible. Watching guys with full packs paddle down the colorado in one man inflatables and short oars was quite amusing. It finished with a slideshow to music and then the preview to the Grand Canyoneering documentary before the 3D portion.

Neptune provided 15% off coupons for canyoneering gear to all.
