Pitney…are you out of the canyons now? How long a run did you have? More than 2 months? I m not positive, but I believe the climbing route is on the other (south) side of the peak (GWT). I have seen Mr. Hart’s pictures of the Great White Crack and it did look interesting. R

which is the crack/slot to the left of the throne as you look at it from the road. went up hidden to the ridge, followed this south to the wall (north) and then headed in. If my memory serves me correctly, (don’t have my notes) about a 100 to 150 foot entry off a tree, second fair sized rap then a few smaller ones to the final drop which is at the NW corner as I’ll call it. Here we found a BOLT which we assumed was from a party coming off the throne. It was somewhat brushy (but no bushwacking) and now it’s sort of nice to drive by and know we were there. Roger and Jane were thinking about doing it last year and may have better memories of the drops.

GWT: first ascent June 27, 1927; and Zion’s first big rescue. W. H. W. Evans was “distinctly of the daredevil type, and a seasoned mountaineer”. Made the summit, lit a signal fire, then disappeared. They went looking for him, and found him, a day and a half later, lying unconscious at the base of the south slope. They made a litter and carried him back into town. The (subsequent) historian Angus Woodbury was part of the rescue team.

So – there is a 4th class route up the back side. It might be kinda stoutish 4th class = 5.6???. Kinda looks like there are a few possibilities. Bring a rope so you can rap back down, rather than tumbling. If you go, let me know what you find.

You might try surfing up for beta on the GWT on utahclimbers.com or rockclimbing.com. Brian Smoot did a moderate type route which climbs the back side and is supposed to be pretty fun, but, a tad sporty for the grade (grade is low, like, 5.5 or so, with maybe one move or two of reasonably protected 5.7, if I recall correctly). I know Brian has been sharing his superb topo with folks, and I think both the park and Zion Rock in Springdale have a copy.

-Brian in SLC (but currently about to drive to the O.C….)
