Happy Hooker Recall Notice (Request for Inspection)

Happy Hooker Recall (Request for Inspection) Notice October 11, 2004

An unknown number of Happy Hooker hook wire swages were improperly set and have the potential to pull out of the swage under body weight. This could be very dangerous.

So far, we have seen two cables pull out of 10 pieces tested. The parts are not batch-stamped so there is no way to identify the suspect batch. The swaged cable should have a test strength of 1500 lbs. Over the sharp edge of the Ibis Hook, the cable should have a strength of 500 lbs.

Imlay Canyon Gear requests that you immediately stop using your Happy Hooker and either return it to us for testing, or test it yourself to assure that the swage is properly set.

To Return:

Disassemble the Hook from the stick, and return the Hook to:

Imlay Canyon Gear 975 West 850 South Woods Cross UT 84087

We will test your cable swage, mark it as tested (if it passes) or send you a new hook, and return to you with 5$ to cover your shipping. We will include new nylock nuts.

To Test Yourself:

1. Disassemble the hook from the stick.

2. Using a solid, overhead anchor, construct a test setup much like the picture. Key points are:

A. the set up must be quite rigid. The anchor should not flex noticeably. B. Test the swaged cable between big carabiners. Testing against the hook might damage the wire where it passes over the hook.

C. Place the cable to be tested as low as possible in the rig. This way, IF the cable blows, the hook will hit you in the shin, rather than in the face.

D. Wear a helmet, wear eye protection and pad the area with substantial padding. If the cable blows, please make it so you do not get hurt.

3. Stand all your weight on the bottom of the rig, then bounce vigorously. A good bounce should produce about twice body weight. Bounce 50 times.

4. If it does not blow out: label as tested and reassemble.

5. If it blows out: return to the address above and we will send you a new, tested hook.

The one test sample that blew out on me, blew on the first bounce. But, it could blow at any time. Make sure you do not get injured if it blows.

My apologies for the problem. Future Happy Hooker swaged cables will be 100% tested and carry a tested mark.

I have placed the illustrations in the FILES section, in the folder “Happy Hooker Problem”.

You could also just have it reswaged (take it over lunch to a wire rope place…they might do it for free…).

Or, use even 9/16″ supertape. Most climbers use hooks with tied webbing on them for attaching a carabiner.

    > Cuz if I return it, I’ll have to pick it up, and see you, and maybe buy more stuff and support you for another month.

    Well, then…return it!

    > PS When it blew, I think the hook lightly scuffed the telemark boot I was wearing. Will you buy me a new pair of terminators, or should I just become less concerned about how I look when skiing with the yuppies?

You must mean when hangin’ out at the apres ski parties in lieu of skiing? ‘Cause, even us yuppies scuff our plastic tele boots after the first run…(duct tape on the biggest bellows helps if you don’t ski with a lift kit or if you have a narrow stance).

I’m thinkin’ Alta, Thursday night, for freshies. Now, who was a good summertime hiker and memorized all the grassy runs?

Brian in SLC ps: Tom, what was root cause for your cable failure?? Wrong size ‘what’?

Hey, mine broke. It did fine in Quandary, but in the living room it only took 25 or 30 jumps, but I finally got it. If I weighed more, maybe I could have gotten it sooner 😉 Appreciate the offer to return and replace, but is there any reason not to just use 1/2 inch tubular webbing instead? Cuz if I return it, I’ll have to pick it up, and see you, and maybe buy more stuff and support you for another month. And this way I can tell which one is mine.
