Sorry, but Brian has a great point. However, to my way of thinking it just goes to prove that this world has lost it’s mind. Listen, negligence is one thing but at what point do we become afraid to experience life, take measured risks and live life? I used to take troubled teens on backpack trips and let me tell you, none of these kids had parents who would take them into a canyon, if they had they would have most likely never meet me. When I was a kid we used to build BMX jumps out of barn doors and let me tell you about the size of jump you can build w/a barn door. My personal record is jumping 16 of my friends. (these are the days before helmets) I also can boast an incident resulting in 12 staples in my head from a similar failed attempt to stick the landing. Anyway, at what point will society push us into a bubble where we are afraid to dare and the liability is too great to go into the outback?
Just a thought! Neil

Takin’ young kids into canyons. And…”what if”?
I think its super that some folk do it. But, think of the blame police if a kid got hurt. Wow.

No kidding, have you seen a modern playground lately? At least here in California, its almost impossible for a kid to hurt him/herself in one. Everything is relativley low to the ground, no sharp or hard edges, etc. And the ground is padded with thick foam or bark. What ever happened to the big, tall swing sets that I used to love (with the hardpack dirt underneath — if you fell you could get hurt).

On a similar thread I have been involved with a certain group who is afraid to teach someone to rappel because of the liability involved. I can’t say I blame them but what is happening to us if we are afraid to share knowledge in the tradition it was passed on to us because of liability. I know I’m ranting here but this really strikes a nerve with me.
Okay time for a deep breath and back to work, Neil
