I’ve been through Water Canyon many times (75 or so) and the local folks are often shy, but not unfriendly. Some times a friendly greeting was met with an averted gaze or seeming indifference, but many more with a smile and hello back. The only hostility I’ve experienced was mild and from the odd small group of loitery teenage boys, not unlike those found elsewhere in the world. The grocery in Colorado City has really good ice cream and local vegetables for a good price. There’s also a brand new drive-through espresso hut on the street adjacent to the grocery store. I haven’t tried it yet, but next time I’m getting me a Co. City latte!

Been through Water a couple of times. The local folks are not at all friendly. I suspect they do not want their children exposed to the heathens from the outside world. That is fine, it is their choice, but they do not own that land, so they have to bear with it. I have never experienced the direct hostility, but definitely the averted gaze and lack of response to a greeting on the trail. I considered stopping in at the store but then skipped it.
I have no problem with people dressing that way and if they want to go around on a hot summer day in such clothes, that’s fine. But by most standards, they are an odd bunch, and there are some bad things going on there, but that’s off topic.
I would not say that the local population behavior should keep anyone away.

Why would you call them that? Ignorance is the only excuse. They are not Pioneering women and children, they are modern persons who live in a religious community that has different norms of dress than you and your friends.
“My daughters and I were actually run out of town….”?
You mean they picked you up, bodily, ran you to the border, and threw you across?
The good people of Colorado City and Hildale are a little different from most of us. They dress differently and have different mores. THEIR grocery store is primarily for people of the town, who are FLDS. When you walk into THEIR environment flaunting skin (ie, showing any skin other than hands, ankles, neck and head) then they are likely to feel uncomfortable, and that may have been reflected back at you. They CERTAINLY would not want their KIDS seeing that!!!
I doubt they actually ran you out of town. May I suggest that you restate what happened, to revoke the libel you have made on the fine people of Hildale?
Perhaps your daughters need to sit you down and provide you with a lesson in tolerance and respect.

I’ve never heard the term “talked through your toes” before… but I can fairly well guess what you mean Tom.  Tom: “May I suggest that you restate what happened, to revoke the libel you have made on the fine people of Hildale?” ÂÂ
Why would I call them pioneering women from the 1800’s? If the picture were a little grainier, and more well worn it could have very well been a picture of Pioneer women from the 1800’s. No libel. I was simply agreeing with Kip’s assertion that they may have looked like Mormon’s from 150 years ago. And quite frankly, they do. It isn’t an insult. Why would you take it as such?  Tom: “You mean they picked you up, bodily, ran you to the border, and threw you across?”
No, but that’s funny the way you posed the Q. It made me laugh!  My daughter’s and I were literally run out of town. Not picked up and thrown out, but run out via a man in a van who sped toward our car, slammed on his breaks and then sped around to the front of our car and slammed on his breaks again. Then he sped away! It was deliberate and achieved the desired effect. We left in a hurry.  We had been curious to see the town and the inhabitants of the town for some time. When we arrived near Zion (our intended destination) we decided to detour over there. It was 108 degree’s out and it gave us an excuse to stay in the air conditioned car for awhile longer. We did talk to people, awe did take pictures, we were under-dressed compared to the townsfolk, and we did go to the store and buy some candy (they have an amazing assortment of candy in there). I suppose my curiosity (I can’t speak for my girls here on WHY they are as curious about the world around them if not more so than I am) can be likened to visiting a Buddhist Temple, a Catholic Church, a Mormon temple, and Amish town, an Irish town, a French town, or any other number of places where people worship and/or live differently than I do. It’s not intolerance that drives curiosity, but the opposite.  Why do you always assume otherwise? I mean, why do you always assume intolerance on my part? How you can use my name and that word in the same sentence is mind-boggling to me. In some respects, I can’t imagine you’re serious and I wonder if you’re trolling or bored?  Is it because of some long ago disagreement we had on Bogley over the rights of Palestine vs the rights of Israel? You might have even alluded to me being an anti-Semite – which was then, and still is absolutely ridiculous. I have Israeli friends (that live there BTW & have had Hamas’s rockets land very close to where they live) that I have posed the same questions to. These would be questions, which in my mind pose very real moral dilemmas, and they do not view me as anything but what I am - honest, direct, and not afraid to speak my mind about what I consider right and wrong.  Anyhow – this is not about that. This WAS about a photo posted on the home page. Now, it’s also about your desire and propensity to take everything I say and turn it into something else. Why? Perhaps you might enlighten me, because I don’t know why.  Tom:  “THEIR grocery store is primarily for people of the town, who are FLDS.”  I/we didn’t see a sign stating such. And if they don’t want us in THEIR store because we dress differently than them and their friends, I would suggest that is a form of intolerance in and of itself.  Tom: “Perhaps your daughters need to sit you down and provide you with a lesson in tolerance and respect.”  Now that is funny! We, in my household are some of the most tolerant people you will ever meet. Respect? Depends on your definition.       — On Mon, 10/31/11, TomJones ratagonia@gmail.com> wrote:

Well, thanks for the discussion of clarification. I’m SO much more informed. Ha! Is there a place on this site to link to the description of the Home Page Photo when it is posted? Sometimes? Often? Never?
When did you take the photo Hank? If it was/is a historical photo I was closely inspecting to see if it was per chance my Great Great Grandmother Carolyn (Mormon pioneer in region). If it is current, I was hoping for a glimpse of a distant cousin (FLDS). For anyone who may not know, there is a very distinct difference between the modern LDS and the FLDS. My family tree has heavily laden branches in both. My heck, I think that I’m canyoneering with folks of which 1/2 are my blood relatives. (Remember Dan; GO LIGERS!)

I was in Water Canyon on September 25th this year. As we got back to the truck, we encountered a similarly-dressed local family going for an early evening stroll. They were friendly enough, asking us if we’d had a good day, and wished us a good evening as they went on their way.

I wasn’t thinking (once again) before throwing words out there. Poor excuse I know, but in my defense, I hadn’t had coffee yet. Sorry for not differentiating between Mormon (LDS) and FLDS.
