Wonderful Ram! We hit 118 deg in Phoenix yesterday and the White Box in West Clear Creek immediately came to mind. Some of the longest swims around and the Coconino sandstone in that section is beautiful. My last trip through there was this time last year. A few fun photos:

Swimming and floating packs in West Clear Creek, July 4th 1989, 22 years ago today. This was the day after our black inner tubes blew up, on our packs, while hiking in, in the 105 degree temps on the hike in and just a few days before the meat of the Parallel Play story. We all managed unique jury rigs to keep our gear dry. This is half way through the canyons longest swim, an “L” shaped passage of about 100 yards. A delightful 3 days in high summer. Recommended.

  • A game of 4 handed hearts in Peek-A-Boo canyon, with Dick, Ando, Jaaaaames and I. Escalante. October 1991. I shot the moon to win http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canyons/

  • The Pearl (Dave Perlick) in the Zion Narrows at 242 CFS, mid April 1992. An old time spring tradition was to “work” our way up thru high water to Orderville, which was generally in normal conditions in April, the snow melted from its head. In this way we would be among the first, if not the first to see the canyon that year, reveling in the changes and seeing the canyon free of the signs of man.

It’s true that nobody knows for sure and until someone(other than me) posts a bk trip report, it will stay that way. I can say that I have been in deep and dark Zion canyons for the each of the last three weekends and I think the threat of snow is a just bit overblown; it has kept canyoneers away(fine by me). I’ve also crossed the snow-bridges of Oak in different months and my thoughts remain the same. Although, this weekend’s next two TR’s will be more telling.

Here’s hoping experienced canyoneers find some safe adventure!

Spin the dial or throw a dart. We were there, we have been through that passage many times, “virtually of course” as it’s now “out of bounds” to many/most. R Arhart, still fondly in our memories. We dearly miss that big smiling N Carolina native. Been through or to that section & corridor with he & his family maybe 3-4 times? And with others on 3-4 trips?

The viewed corridor is one of shaded fallen ice and not layed down snow per se. It’s ice (which I assume, has a snowy base)that falls from canyon walls and builds up early spring and holds into a mid-late summer natural wonder. I’d guess the ice field is bigger and will last longer this season? Were it merely a snow field, and open to periods of sun and heat it would diminish. As is, it’s a cool, tight shaded area. In past consecutive low “water” years I’ve seen it slip away by late Aug or Sept. The spot is “not” exactly between S and M Oak. Maybe it’s really in AZ, Mexico,Timbucto or OZ; Aye Hank?

And now that folk have seen the photo, maybe that’s good enough? And the urge to “conquer with ice ax” the mini mountain and alley of ice and raining water, and to report it to the canyon chieftans… there is a quiet, when the canyon wren calls out.

If curiosity bites, spend your hours in the snowy/ice of middle Echo Cyn folk. There, much easier access and a more viable rescue.
