Not too weird. I only saw a photo of a fox in the wild which would be an awesome photo. I did not know the story. You people just like to find something to attack others about.
Weird folk on this group to jump to that conclusion!
Yes, a trapped animal or injured animal is horrible.

our ability to pity something seems to be directly linked to our ability to empathize with that thing/for example;when you swat a horse fly you’re thinking”you blood sucking parasite, you got what you deserved”if you think anything at all../but one Easter we camped out up mill creek canyon to escape”jeep safari”weekend/as we hiked in,we were inundated by BUTTERFLYS/i would be stretched very far to say that it was a plague, but there were MILLIONS of insects in the air/if you breathed too hard you were going to suck in a butterfly/if they were ladybugs(ladybeetles)then you’d get the same reaction/”this is MAGICAL”/if they were blackflies you’d get a whole different description/”this sucks”/a fox is pretty(and we’re all pretty, right?),cunning, adaptable, nimble, and a good family man/we can relate to that…therefore we can pity the beast/we can imagine ourselves in the same hole so we pity him/if he was dead there’d be no reason to empathize…cuz none of us is going to die(right?)/it’s a very anthropocentric way to look at things…but who can help themselves?/

Noooo…not good! Don’t rub our faces is it! That’s what the news media is for ~and PETA and VEGANS when it comes to poor helpless animals! Those guys are SICK they way they use shock-value to try and get their point across. Ever see an animal skinned alive? Just join a PETA group or become a VEGAN and they’ll have you posting that sh*t all over the net….in order to sway folks to your way of thinking of course!
I don’t know how other folks deal with unpleasantness like the fact that WE eat animals, and nature is cruel, and things die, but of course we all know that facts are facts whether we close our eyes are not. I guess it all depends on the person as t to how they deal with it. Choking it down daily is NOT my cup of tea. It doesn’t mean I’m ignorant of the fats, it means I’m very sensitive to the facts. Contrary to what you’re saying Koen, I think that the opposite is true. The more you choke it down, the more immune to it you become. It’s probably a biological mechanism to deal with stress….ask any person who works with sick and/or dying people or animals!
Who wants to see a poor helpless creature like that and BE reminded of his helplessness? Not me! Helplessness has got to be thee most tragic of all feelings in the world! Whether you’re going through it yourself or seeing another human being or creature going through it. No offense to whoever posted that picture…it was just really really sad.

I didn’t mean my post in such a way that we should close our eyes to the less pleasant facts of nature – like it or not. It’s not good to close your eyes, nature isn’t clean nor fair and one should realise that. Having it rubbed in now and again is a maybe healthy antidote, our lives are aseptised enough already. I didn’t like the picture, at all, but well… that’s life & death… and we should live with it.
I just posted my comment as a reaction to another post by someone who had very clearly not read the whole series and was blessfully unaware of the fate of the poor fox – or is a real sicko !
So the two rattlers who met Tom went on to a happier fate ? What happened ? Did they bite him and gorge on his little toe ? And you call acute indigestion a happier fate ?

Is that ever the truth! Does our compassion grow with the size of the animal? The birds and mice we see dead in almost every canyon. They not count as much? Or the dead dear? Is it because they are dead already and we missed the drama, that it doesn’t touch us as much? Koen is right, we have become so insulated from birth and death. Used to happen in the bedroom when 3 generations shared the same house and everyone attended. Messy business. Now it is hidden behind sterile sheets and doors. FWIW, our foxy friend was probably in a stupor within 2 hours of the picture and went easily, if such a thing can ever be said. My two cents Ram (Son of, and part of a family of undertakers)

Yeah, after reading the story earlier, I was a bit shocked to see the photo. It is painful. It would be different if the story had a happy ending. Another option of a picture with animals trapped in potholes would be Tom’s recent photo of 2 rattlesnakes trapped in a pothole (same canyon as the fox actually). It had a good ending.

I thought it was a good photo. Sad, yes, but unless you are a committed vegan, you are likely playing a role in sustaining far sadder animal suffering every day.
P.S. I am no vegan

I knew it, this is a forum full of sick people 😉 !

I agree. Beyond heartless. Please change it… I have a pic of Anthony in Shenanigans: equally trapped, cute, hairy, wide-eyed. I could email it to the moderators.

When you post, please change the Subject appropriately, to make reading and searching easier. You can use the following abbreviations: TRIP = Trip Report; BETA = Canyon Beta; PARTNER = Partner and/or Rides; ETHICS = Ethics; TECH = Technical Questions and Tips; BIZ = E Group Business; SALE = Stuff for Sale. Please use a Tilde ~ after the abbreviation, so we know you are coding for us, such as:

Yeah, after reading the story earlier, I was a bit shocked to see the photo. It is painful. It would be different if the story had a happy ending. Another option of a picture with animals trapped in potholes would be Tom’s recent photo of 2 rattlesnakes trapped in a pothole (same canyon as the fox actually). It had a good ending.
