This guy (gal?) was one territorial bugger. It is May 19, 2004 and Aaron and I are in Checkerboard with the pioneers of the route ,Kip Marshell, Matt Smith and Rhett Chambers. Aaron and I are lagging at mid canyon and we come to this commotion. The mighty pioneers of the canyon have been beaten back by a lone turkey, who will not give an inch. The turkey is on a log jam that we need to use as an anchor for the drop immediately beyond. The turkey is snapping away, feint charging and in general kicking our heroes butts!
Rhett slips back and gives me the report and Aaron and I can’t believe it. I approach….Dang it IS one mean turkey. Out comes the ski pole! En Garde!! We spar! I thrust and the dastardly bird finally gives ground!….. and falls off the log and down the 20 foot drop. I had heard that turkeys were poor flyers and this I can now confirm. The wings provide just enough lift to break the fall and off goes the turkey down canyon, throwing looks of hate over his/her shoulder
The anchor area now vacated, we shake off the chill from our stalled progress and rap down. Three scooped out indents down canyon, we pass the turkey. If looks could kill, I would be dead. This ornery fowl never will grace any human’s table. Happy holiday Ram
