Keyhole Canyon Update / New Bolts in Keyhole

Ran through middle Keyhole this morning to check out the new anchor. One of the local Joe’s put a very nice two-bolt anchor in for the first rap in Keyhole. To me, this seems like a very good idea, as the continued use of the “Ponderosa Pine across the wash” was eventually going to compact the ‘soil’ at the base of the tree and kill it. So, I support this bolt anchor placement.

The anchor could use 3 more 8mm or so Rapides to complete it’s rigging.

The trailwork done last fall seems to be holding well. Middle Keyhole was fairly dry (wet up to the shorts hem), and the water was pleasant.

Did you really mean (wet up to the shorts, ahem), or were you > wearing a wetsuit? > Just did the MIDDLE, not the lower. Was wearing shorts (thanks for asking), and just got the hems on the legs wet.

Nah, more the size of a quarter. Was the same glue in rig that you and I placed in Pine Creek, Tom.

I have a couple of photo’s of the patch job, but, they’re close ups and you can’t tell the location from those pictures. Basically, if you’re at the head of the canyon, LDC, its what, about waist level or so on the left side? Surrounding rock is orange, and you’ll see a round red dot. Red point! Was a pretty good patch job.

Walking next to the tree has eroded the soil away (which is mostly just sand, anyway. Which compacts the roots, eventually killing that nice tree.

I could never figure out where the old bolts were pulled. The story is they were chopped as a protest to Jonathon’s commercialization of Keyhole. The choppers have bought in to the new anchor, to save the tree. The point was made, nobody won.

Geez, all kinds of changes…There was a sign after coming out past the last swim? How was it mounted and where? It directed you up to slickrock, to avoid the trail up the road landfill? Which way did it direct you? On the left or right LDC? R
