Keyhole conditions ?

I grabbed an express permit for Keyhole for Thursday. The permit said “wet/dry suits recommended”.

Has anyone been in there lately and do you really need a wetsuit?

TIA, Jim

I also went through Keyhole last Saturday and I wouldn’t recommend a wetsuit. The water is a little cold, especially the 100 ft. swim down the narrow corridor, but just after that and around the corner you step in the boiling sun again and then back to the car. It was my first time through Keyhole and it was pretty cool. Very short, but very nice. I would recommend going earlier especially being a holiday weekend. Last weekend when we went through it was about 10 a.m. and we had a group ahead of us and 2 groups come behind us that we let go by and another group of two (without ropes) went by. So if you are trying to avoid crowding at the rappel stations then I would go earlier. Have fun!

My wife went through with a group on Saturday. Half wore wetsuits. The half that didn’t got a little cold here and there, esp towards the end, but they weren’t visibly shivering or anything. As long as they kept moving they were warm. Of course this was afternoon with temps over 100 degrees so YMMV. So the advice is wetsuits not needed IF you keep moving, but you’d be more comfortable with wetsuits.

When you post, please change the Subject appropriately, to make reading and searching easier. You can use the following abbreviations: TRIP = Trip Report; BETA = Canyon Beta; PARTNER = Partner and/or Rides; ETHICS = Ethics; TECH = Technical Questions and Tips; BIZ = E Group Business; SALE = Stuff for Sale. Please use a Tilde ~ after the abbreviation, so we know you are coding for us, such as:

  • I recently put a zion condition post in. Search for that for lots of Zion canyon conditions. One of which was Keyhole; but that was mid-June. At that time, you could definitely get along without one. Would be more fun with one though. 2/3 full would be my recommendation; then you could take your time and do all the water sections (I chose to stem fairly high over the last corridor which was a swim…)

    Take care, A.J.
