Over the last weekend we made a run through So. Utah and had an awesome time.
We started out last Friday with Englestead. Didnt get on the trail until 11:30, but made really good time considering the large group we had. We finished Engle by 4pm and hiked out Orderville in 2.5-3.5 hours. Pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/82380252@N06/sets/72157631442329316/
The next day we drove to Escalante and decided to check out Egypt 2 since we only had half a day. We ascended the canyon, which was fun, and there was so much mud, knee deep in places, that we basically did the whole canyon barefoot. Pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/82380252@N06/sets/72157631442377226/
The next day we did Neon, which was really wet. We passed a group on the way in that advised us to wait at least 45 min after it pours rain to start the canyon, because they saw it flash from the cathedral 45 min after it rained the day before. Needless to say there was a slight trickle of water throughout the whole canyon. Pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/82380252@N06/sets/72157631442395828/
That night we drove back to zion. The next day we did pine creek, also very wet, and then most of the group went home. Pictures of pine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/82380252@N06/sets/72157631442419122/
The following day four of us had permits to do telephone & behunin. We got on the trail at 7:30 & up to the spring by 10:30. One in our group decided he was too tired, so he bailed. I thought telephone was an awesome and difficult canyon. We had to spend some time fixing a few anchors and didnt finish till 3:30. At that point we decided we were pretty much beat to hell, and were a little sketched out by some weather, so we skipped behunin. A fun trip for sure!!

Im not too sure how difficult the ascent would be with muddy shoes, we did the whole thing barefoot. It became obvious as soon as we started up the canyon that shoes were more of a hinderance than help (check out this photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/82380252@N06/8054318900/in/photostream). It was definitley interesting walking through all the mud with no shoes, and no idea what kind of rocks or creepy things might be in the muck. It was a fun experience, then just as i was going to put my shoes back on for the hike out, i stepped on a cactus and had to spend 20 min pulling hairy thorns out of my foot. Definitley worth it to do the canyon barefoot though!!

I see, nicely done. So much attention paid to E3 and E2 gets neglected. nice climbing up the slanted chimney part way up, with muddy shoes no less. Easy down, awkward up. Not trivial.

We didnt plan to do E2, we left our ropes and harnesses in the car. We started hiking around and got down to the second exit below the main narrows of E2 and we decided we might as well go as far as we can up the canyon. Some of us hiked to the wall, but we exited the alternative entrance thats like .5 mi below the big drop in. Unless you some super powers, it would be tough to get up that wall!!
That was my first time out to escalante, i really enjoyed being there, and im looking forward to spending more time around there.

I enjoyed all the pictures and TR’s. Thanks i have a question about ascending E2. The mid canyon rap can be climbed, but the upper canyon is a dead end with 250+ (?)foot rap up top? Did you go up and then down or were you in another Egypt? One of the pictures seems to show recent rockfall too. Cool!

That is the area I speak of, thanks for that perspective. I have never witnessed the pothole in full conditions, just in keeper mode, amazing how different it is after flow.

There was a keeper pothole in Neon?? All I saw was a bunch of water =). It was my first time down the canyon, so im not 100% sure, but i think this is where the keeper would be: http://www.flickr.com/photos/82380252@N06/7976840538/in/photostream
