Last of the Great Unknown update

Hi Everyone, the film made it’s Canadian debut at Banff last weekend to a greatcrowd of 700. The HD projection and sound systems were the best I’ve ever seen. Here are a few updates:

1 – The film will play this Saturday night at the 13th annual River Runner Film Festival in Flagstaff. This is a charity event to benefit Grand Canyon Youth. Additionally, Dave Mortenson’s film about running the Colorado through Grand Canyon in historic boats will also play. It should be a great Grand Canyon night and a good charitable cause. I hope to see some of you there. More information here:

2 – The film was just released on Apple iTunes today. You can buy it or rent it in both standard definition and high definition. A note on HD: unfortunately, iTunes only broadcasts 720p HD resolution, not the full 1080p HD resolution. It still looks far better than standard definition though. The film sound track was mastered in Dolby digital 5.1. The audio and visual quality are quite impressive if you have a large screen HD TV and surround sound system in your home. I hope a few of you that rent or buy the film will leave a review. Details here:

3 – A BluRay disc with full 1080p HD quality should be available for purchase by the end of Nov. You must have a BluRay player for this disc to work. It will not work on a DVD player. It does work on the Sony PS3 BluRay player. The film will only be released on BluRay disc because releasing it on DVD disc would require a significant compromise in the quality of the stunning HD cinematography. As a bonus, the BluRay disc will contain some fun and interesting footage that did not make it into the final cut of the film.

Best Regards,

Rich

Yes and no. The film can be distributed very easily nowadays via itunes, netflix, amazon, bluray, dvd, etc…
The only issue with that is sometimes it is simply better to see a film in a theatre than at a home. It’s a much more enjoyable experience.
So yes, our goal is to have it available easily to the public, which it will be, within a month or so. The reason it has a restricted release for the first 6-8 months is to allow it to be screened at film festivals – which broadens the exposure to the media and industry in general.
Tentatively, it is scheduled for release on Nov. 1st. Depending on what happens with Banff, we may reschedule it a few weeks later.
As far as “events” go for screening it, it costs money, and there isn’t a huge return if any at all, considering the time and costs for us to show it. So we aren’t really actively looking for screening opportunities, unless we can be sure we can cover our own costs. Salt Lake is really the only location we are looking at, and we haven’t finalized it yet.

A bit of a tangent here, but it seems like there is a need for some sort of semi-formal distribution network for multi-media of this sort, house parties, in-store events, churches, and colleges.

Likely, same would get started by the independent producers themselves.

Dan,

I might be able to get you a venue at Dixie State College in St. George for a low cost, if you are interested.

Thanks Dan, I will keep an eye out for a venue and let you know.  I look forward to seeing the complete film.

that’s a great question…  the answer is – we don’t know?

we need to find a venue, and that costs money, and so it is tough to know if there would be enough interest to rent a place, and charge enough money to pay for the venue, and still fill the seats.

so we are still trying to figure out the options.  presumably we could screen it in october, but there aren’t any real film festival type programs in Salt Lake area until this winter.

so that’s where we are at…  not much help, i know.
