Lost in Coyote Gulch

I saw this last night on Fox news, made me cringe with all the errors. I guess Coyote Gulch is now in “Escalante Nat’l Forest” in Utah County…

That is a crazy long way to travel. He likely went up the hill out of Brimstone that accesses Little Canyon, but still……what was he thinking going on such a long walkabout? Hoping to bump into someone? Got twisted around? It is the opposite direction from Dry Fork trail head and how many times further? WOW! Thanks for the info.

I’m gonna take a wild guess and project that the trip was in Wet Coyote Gulch. Its no easy task to land in Fools, but seems way more possible and logical than from Dry Fork?????

OK, a bit more on this. The lad had quite the walkabout. After getting separated from the group in the Spooky/Peek-a-boo area, he wandered over the Scorpion Bench, all the way to and down into Fools Canyon and down to the Escalante River. Man, is that lost, or what? > Not many folks down that way. He was very lucky to wander into some people at all. Tom has said it before. Ya get lost? Sit down and let someone find you. Epic wanderings this time. Lucky boy….

I just looked at the map. I can’t fathom how he managed this? How did he get by Brimstone? At what point does he leave Dry Fork and take off cross country, uphill and land the against the grain angle to Fools? I have heard this from 2 sources now, but it just seems wrong. More tomorrow

OMG!! Just off of the phone with Rick Green. He insists that I post a complete disclaimer for him. He states that he had nothing to do with the debacle…..errrrrrr, I mean search and rescue, other than to point out on a map where Spookey and Peek-a-boo were, as no one involved had any idea. My understanding is that if the lad had come into the Subway in town, it would have been a good move, for until 10 PM that is where all the searchers were. Stories of helicopters flying at night in high winds and more. More to come later today. WOW!

So this is why I hate local/regional news (despite some talented people who I know have worked for such programs, wink/wink/nudge/nudge). Why can’t they get their information right or just not report nebulous concepts? Utah Co., Escalante NF, Coyote Gulch, photos of Peakaboo and Spooky. Which is it? And the recommendations they make, come-on, talk to people like they have at least a sixth grade education (or more importantly, recommend those who need to have medication in the backcountry carry it on themselves). The twitter thing? Thats not news, thats infotainment. Hate that they make such stories into epic survival accounts. Boy lost for 24 hours is no doubt scary as hell for him and family, but barely an “amazing” survival story.

OOops, back to the recesses. Suckered out with accounts of unfortunate events this weekend.

Let me add my own disclaimer as well. Not sure if Kane County SAR has written me off or what, but it’s funny that I learned about this “search” from the news rather than from a phone call asking me to come play. So no, I had nothing to do with this theatrical event, either.

Apparently “cactus and stuff”. After making a rope out of sticks? Glad he’s safe, but I’d frame it as more of what not to do…
