Mystery Conditions?

Has anyone done Mystery Canyon in Zion recently? Never done it and know there is some water (besides the narrows) and was wondering how deep they are and if a full wetsuit would be needed.

Never even tried to avoid it, just suited up and went for it.

Here’s Don rapping into the pool, October 13.

Gives you some idea of the size of the pool at the bottom of the springs rap. We were through on a cloudy, windy day, so it was nice to have the wetsuits at the final waterfall rappel, as well, into the narrows.

    Have fun!

Hey Bryan: > Been through twice recently. The spring is cold and deep enough to get you pretty wet. Easiest (safest) way to stay dry is the first guy down can assist the rest of the group. Second person down rappels to water edge. First guy down pulls the rope and lifts him up and over onto the small ledge on the right (rdc) side of the spring. I didn’t even get the bottom of my canyoneers wet! First guy down might want to wear some neo. My brother Steve has also set us up with a guided rappel over the spring. He was able to disconnect just at waters edge and make a quick go for it around the right side of the water and only got wet to his knees. There are other alternatives, but these are the safest. Have a great trip– it’s a good one.

  • Word from some friends from about 2 weeks ago….Dry to Mystery Springs near the bottom. Wetsuit? depends on the air temps and how well you deal cool water. The spring and the tenth of a mile beyond are not overly cold, but it is November. You won’t die without one, but might be more comfortable for the finales with one. YMMV Ram
