Why is it every time I post there is always someone who assumes I am slamming someone else? Yes I am a self-proclaimed tightwad. I thought I made that clear in my last post. The whole shoestring budget thing. I squeeze every penny. I only eat canned plankton on my tips because its 3 for $1, I got my wetsuit cheep because someone died in it, my 4Runner was a steal because it smells like cat urine and all of the sexy women I canyoneer with used to be men. (Obscure Simpsons reference, don’t feel bad if you didn’t get it)

I am also a self-proclaimed smart-ass. And I’m pretty sure Shane picked up on that. For everyone else: every time I make a smart ass comment I will end the sentence with a .

I wasn’t trying to be self-contradictory. But if you thought that, then I was trying to show an example of the Shakespearean irony (or blatant hypocrisy) that sometimes exists in this egroup. No, I never asked Shane for his beta. Why would I, I just got the name and password from a buddy who is in the circle of friends. My real point was to spice up this place with a little humor

    > Otherwise, why don’t you post a TR and photos for your “route”? You know, > the sharing of information and ideas thing Shane was talking about?

    -Bill

Well truth be told my I have never finished my “route”. I have only scouted it out this summer, but plan to attempt it this January. Any takers?

Sheeesh. Shane’s not charging you for access to the land and indeed even offered the beta to you for free if you can’t afford it or are too cheap. If it’s always about the bottom line as you claim then you are cheap (or as Shane puts it, a tightwad).

Looks like Shane called it right about the tightwad thing. Jeez, if you’re going to waste time here with garbage at least make an argument that makes sense rather than being self-contradictory. Are you saying you’re a tightwad or not a tightwad? Exactly what are you trying to say? By the way, did you ever ask Shane for any beta before slamming him on the list? Is the real point just to slam Shane?

Otherwise, why don’t you post a TR and photos for your “route”? You know, the sharing of information and ideas thing Shane was talking about?

How is it you will bitch and moan over the couple of Andrew Jacksons you shell out to the NPS on your Zions trips but suddenly I am a “tight wad” when I don’t want to “blow the dust off” my wallet? Oh wait that is another issue. That’s about being charged twice for access to public… blah blah blah. Or is it? Or is it always about the bottom line? Lord knows that’s why I don’t want to pay for either one.

    > just let me know and I will set you up in the Circle of Friends Welfare Program. > How is that for charity……

Sounds great, sign me up. You know my email address. I’ll even ware a t-shirt that says “Circle of Friends Welfare Program.”

    > And just to show you I believe in equality…… I’ll pay you 15 > cents for every new route you, or anyone else, sends to me……… > fair enough?

Yeah I got one for your Wasatch climbing section: the North Face of Sugarhouse Park Hill. It’s a dangerous winter route with all of the dodging of little kids that are comming down. The decent off the south face has a tricky 5.4 move over a fence that is difficult to protect, but is has a bypass. The return route is perilous as you head back to base camp under the 2100 South overpass… but I’ll wait until I see that check for 15 cents before I reveal anymore of my gummbie routes.

  • Stanley Blank

Yeah Shane. On the one hand you’re like a gossip columnist who sucks up all the juicy free information from everyone else and then sells it back to us. And I’ve noted just a tiny bit of plagiarism in some of your stuff. Shame.

But on the other hand it’s nice to have yours and Tom’s and a few other sites as a source of information, so thanks.

On the other hand the “circle of few” thing is a tad annoying. Shame.

On the other hand I wish I’d thought of it first.

Hey…… how come I can’t create a poll??? I want poll creating status……. If I actually had poll creating status and if anyone actually gives a shit this is what my poll would ask:

    1. Who wants to make this a fun egroup where we share information and ideas?

    2. Who wants to play cloak and dagger with our secret agent decoder rings?

    3. Which gumbie wants a gold star because they know something the other gumbie doesn’t?

    4. I don’t care, cause it will be in the next guidebook/website edition anyways.

    5. I’ll answer this after I have finished important work like cleaning the hamster cage.

    6. who wants to hold a good old fashion book burning and get rid of those troublesome guidebooks once and for all?

    7. How about an old fashion lynching, that will teach the gumbie’s about telling “secrets”.

Damn, I hate it when somebody says what I was planning to say, only better. On the first comment, I’ll add that I don’t expect to see another party in obscure canyons, but wouldn’t be upset unless they’ve got the only reasonable campsite and get pissy about sharing.

I heartily second Shane’s other comment. If I think ZNP is getting unreasonable, I’ll do whatever canyon I want, when I want. They can’t post armed guards at the exit to every canyon. I already avoid popular canyons on weekends, so the odds of getting caught are pretty low. I do see why Tom might want to leave this one off the survey though, since we’re all still pretending to be mature, rule respecting adults and not just rabble.

As far as getting caught where or when you shouldn’t be, I’ve had very good luck with the following: 1. Be pleasant, respectful, and apologetic. 2. Act ignorant. 3. Pretend to be sorry. 4. Grovel if you must.

And yes, I got my ticket to comment by writing a couple of letters to the super.

    Have fun, Gordon

    The response………or……food fight………

“I don’t mind encountering other groups in the popular canyons, but pretty much expect no encounters in more obscure canyons.” This has two meanings to me, not sure which is right. Obscure canyons are obscure cause few know of them. Hmmmm…..do I check that one or not……….

And just what is this “Zion Poachers List” that some of the Zion Canyoneers keep telling me about? Is that like the snowballs I tossed at the teacher in 2nd grade and the principal said he was putting the incident on my permanent record?

Hey Mr. Wrona ……….. maybe you know about this mysterious “Zion Poachers List”, several of the Zion Canyoneers shout with glee when they tell me your name is on the list. Did you know your name was on the list? Were you even aware that such a list existed? Has anyone (and I don’t want any friend of a friend stories) actually seen this list.

Anyone here actually received a ticket for poaching? (and again, I don’t want any friend of a friend stories.)

For fact, I know of one moron who led a group into Pine Creek, during a rain storm, without a permit and had to be rescued. The NPS gave the trip leader a $100 ticket. Damn, the guys split it up 5 ways and it hardly made a dent in anyone’s wallet. Hell, our bar tab at the bit-n-spur makes that look like a tip.

    Slow night……..can you tell?

What are your feelings about the 12 persons per canyon Interim Use Limits for Zion, Spring 2003? Please check all that apply.

o I don’t go to Zion, so I don’t care. o Seems like a good idea, the canyons are too crowded. o I like the idea of having limits, but the limits are too small, and should be much larger. o I would rather have the canyon to myself, on the occasions that I get the permit. o I would rather be able to get a permit most of the time, and can deal with the crowding. o I don’t really think the Park should regulate day-canyoneering at all. Why should they? o I don’t like encountering other groups in the canyons. o I don’t mind encountering a couple of other groups in the canyons. o I don’t mind encountering other groups in the popular canyons, but pretty much expect no encounters in more obscure canyons. o The system has been just fine the last couple of years, why change it? o I will try to get reservations for permits, and not go to Zion unless I do. o I can’t take it. I’ll just go elsewhere. o I’ll head down whether I have a permit or not, and we’ll do whatever canyon we can get a permit for. o I don’t do permits anyway, so it won’t effect me. o I am outraged that the Park would exclude me from OUR canyons for someone’s theoretical concept of Solitude.
