Hello everyone. My name is Orion and I am from Homer Alaska. I am interested in Canyoneering so I signed up just to get info and ideas and trick of the trade. I will be going to DeVry in Phoenix hopefully this year or next year. I use to climb, the last time I did any climbing was about ten years ago. I had a fall of over 85 feet, sorta my fault but also the teacher I was helping fault. I was on a rock face that was to technical for any of the students that were in his class, after all it was a junior high group. I was in junior high and had been climbing for only severl years with very little experience at any multipitch climbs or technical climbing. I do know and have been taught how to place friends and cams but when I was climbing this rock it was poor quality with very little holds and cracks. I had a couple of cams and one friend in place but they were below me. I had told the instructor about the fact that I didn’t think it was safe for the kids but he told me to keep going. So I did. I also had no chalk and it was a hot day and I was sweating a river. Well needless to say when I was about 50 or 60 feet from my last placement I asked for him to belay me so I could reach around and try to do another placement and He had just left me there while talking to the students. I yelled out and then slipped and fell almost a total of 85 feet and then slammed into the rock hard. I have played hockey and have been checked before but this was harder than any check I have had. Well I dangled there yelling at the top of my lungs untill he let me down. I am now tring to get my courage up and go do this again but I would love to combine it with hiking, swimming and other things. Your list is by far the best I have seen. If any of you have any tips I would appreciate any help at all. I would love to experience this sport along with all of you!! Thanks!!!!

Reply from Arizona: That sucks on the fall, but great that you’re up to try again. I have little experience and consider myself to be a newbee also. What I have done to get started is to hike lots of canyons and take some classes to build basic skills. The more canyon hiking I do the more places I end up scrambling, the more basic skills (and gear) the more aggressive the hiking/back packing has become. Grand Canyon rules! Good luck, if you come to Arizona you will love it. The heat here takes a lot of getting used to but the desert is so different from other places that I’ve lived that it’s a wonder to explore. Since you are heading to Arizona, I’d like to give a small plug for the http://www.wildernessadventures.com people, they offer hands on rock/cayoneering training. I have gone with them twice for basic skills and they are good people.
