Orderville conditions

Courtney reports from a run thru Orderville

The 4/3 wetsuit worked perfectly in Orderville this weekend. The water was clear, cold and very low. Not a single swim. Waist-deep only.

Frozen mud makes a good driving surface, something to be aware of before entering an area in the early morning , and something to take advantage of in worst case scenarios.

And your truck may spend the night parked in the ditch as did the vehicle in front of us

A reminder that driving on messed up roads makes them quite a bit more messed up. If possible, stay off them until they are back to dry(ish) condition. Plowing deep tire tracks just makes them more difficult and costly for your local county road department to clean up.

Can’t say I feel real bad about our choice to continue on the North Fork Road Sunday. Even in those conditions, there is enough traffic to chew the road up pretty good. Less-used roads, on the other hand, especially as “first driver” – on these your impacts are significant, if you choose to proceed. Perhaps you should choose to find a different adventure.

Was down Orderville way today. Looks like it rained about an inch in upper Orderville yesterday. North Fork road was quite muddy. We parked my station wagon about a mile in, and all hopped into Kody’s big diesel truck. Kinda sporty even with a skilled driver and large, capable vehicle. We parked at the Orderville Corral and walked down from there, passing a jeep on the jeep trail (makes sense) that was a few inches from sliding into the ditch. Good choices, Mr. Jeep driver.

On the way out, the Jeep was gone, and the roads a little bit drier. Still, the road is a mess and I was glad Kody was driving. Had to cross a couple mud pits to get back to where my wagon was parked.

A couple days with some actual sunshine might dry it out pretty good – but I would not expect too much. It was pretty messed up.

Not yet, but it is supposed to rain/snow tomorrow perhaps.

I may want to descend Orderville Canyon next week. Does anyone know current conditions? I hear some higher elevations have had snow – would this likely be a problem for the approach?
