Greetings Canyoneers from an a Volley wearing OzCanyoner. We plan on visiting the US in May and will have 3 days free (23rd, 24th, 25th May)to explore Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon.
Originally slated as just a Zion/Grand visit, we have been told that Bryce is a must-see also?
We need some advice on what would be the best things to see and do in those 3 days. Unfortunately we won’t have our canyoning gear with us (can’t lug it around the world for 7 weeks), so are pretty much limited to anything that can be done as a basic day hike.
The Angels Landing walk sounds good in Zion – is it worth doing?, and/or is there anything better?
Are there any “walk-through” canyons worth doing, either “tourist” or “canyoner” grade?
Any other must-see places in Zion & Bryce?
Also, what part of the Grand Canyon is the best to see if we only have a day available?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks Dave Jones

Don’t go to Grand Canyon unless you take the South Kaibob down to the Tonto Plateau. Or – at least part way down.
You truly need to descend into the canyon to appreciate the 3-D of it all.
And the S. Kaibab has better views than the Bright Angel trail.
Speaking from experience on both.

David – Regarding the Grand Canyon. You can visit my website for some information: http://www.allhikers.com
The Canyon will be quite crowded in late May. The South Rim has many more features and services than the North Rim. Both are outstanding. I would avoid the Bright Angel Trail as you will be turned off by the masses of people on it. A very nice day hike that will be less crowded from the South Rim will be the South Kaibab down to Cedar Ridge. That is 1.5 miles each way. The is a toilet at Cedar Ridge, but no water. The views are fantastic from there.

Crazy! Like saying – I’ve got three days for Australia – in addition to Ayer’s Rock, what should I see? ;->

Yes, Bryce is a must-see also. It’s still on MY list, haven’t gotten to it in 12 years of living here!

Imlay? Kolob? Heaps, if you are real fit? Ask that Joe Budgen guy what he would recommend.
We otta host you. Bring the volleys, we can fit you with the rest of the gear.

We can hit Angels Landing on the way up to Imlay. Or Heaps, but for Heaps, it would be dark still.

With the time available, you are pretty much limited to The North Rim (quite a longer drive around to the South Rim). So you drive there, hike down the North Kaibab trail to the river, hike back out. Called Rim-to-Rim. 28 miles. 6000 feet down, then 6000 feet up. Kind of like fun, only different.

Although, in late May, it would require quite a cold snap to make this reasonable. Otherwise, you are looking at 4 quarts going down, and about 8 quarts coming back out.
