The National Park Service is backing away from a plan to ban commercially guided climbing in the Black Canyon of the Gunnison after a united chorus of climbers opposing the proposal was joined by several U.S. senators.

“Without guided climbs and the technical assistance and expertise provided by a guide, we believe many of our constituents would not be able to experience a climb in the Black Canyon,” wrote Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet of Colorado in a letter to the Park Service director. In a response released this week by Udall’s office,

Park Service regional director John Wessels wrote the senators that “we are not proceeding at this time with the new restrictions.” “The issue will not move forward without much more internal deliberation,” Wessels said.
