Pictures- Shenanigans 11-10-12

After many hours around the fire, we head to bed at about 10 PM. One half hour later, Tom, Malia and company arrive. They make a lot of noise. Tom opens my zipper to my tarp and says….”Shenanigans tomorrow?” Who am I to argue? Part of our group heads over to No Kidding and Blarney combo platter. We head to Shennany!

It is cool and cloudy and we move briskly, staying warm. The 4th narrows is started and it begins to snow. Doc Science and I go over the top of the tightest narrows (more on another post) and we meet at the end. The final rap and off we go. We hit a full blizzard on the way out and it is beautiful. Great day had by all

Conditions in the tightest narrows were very easy in the first section and much more difficult in the 2nd and shorter section. This reflects low sand levels and an easier than normal passage, although Tom might dispute this. The hardest part is right after the 2nd section starts, a spot I don’t recall ever being this difficult before. Beautiful canyon! Pictures? https://picasaweb.google.com/aramv14/Shenanigans111012

    And I SHALL!

It was a visit to an old friend. No, not RAM, Shenanigans. I don’t think I have been through it in at least 5 years, given that the last 2 trips through I went over the top.

I’m at 180 lbs, so I SHOULD be able to get through. The first 2/3 to the “jig-jag” seemed easier than usual, with only a couple places that required ingenuity to get my chest through. But just past the jig-jag – a different story. A very tight section at chest level. A helmet stand was not enough to get up over it, partly because it was tight down to the pelvis too. I tried going down on one knee, then to the ground, but it was not good there either, tight at the bottom, and smaller ahead. I got real concerned about getting totally stuck. So I backed out.

I should have realized that being first in line put extra pressure on me, and I should have just moved to the back of the line, maybe tried again. But I also knew I could go up at the jig jag, so I did. It was a fight to get up, but not scary, just mostly hard work. Up and over is good!

I agree with the “easier than normal passage” statement. I went through a few weeks ago and , yes the sand level has re-established itself. It seemed to me to be easier than last year when I did it with John D. Last year was the first time my chest/back touched both walls at the same time. Usually I slide through without an issue. Last year required a full stop and “working” it a bit. This year is back to “normal”…for me.

Thanks for sharing the pics Ram. I was wondering if the area there had gotten any snow or moisture last weekend with the storms moving around. I was in Moab doing SAR training and we got hit pretty hard up there.
