If interested I have posted photos to my recent visit to Mt. Mitchel, NC. For those of you who have never been out “east” this is the highest elevation point this side of the Mississippi River. It was a beautiful sunny day with temps in the mid 30’s. The photos were taken around 10am on a Saturday yet as you can see my truck was the only vehicle in the parking lot. It seems that those in the “south” tend to stay inside once the temps drop below 40.
The canyon connection hides in the ride up to the mountain. Once you leave interstate 40 and head north on state route 80 you travel through a twisting winding hairpin turn filled canyon which connects you with the famous Blue Ridge Highway. Gain in elevation is about 2000 ft in a short distance and was worth my 3 hour drive from Columbia, SC. Need to try it again in a sportier vehicle or motorcycle.

Dave, I have descended several of the “canyons of the east” and would be happy to give you details on them. The corner of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina can keep you entertained for quite some time. True, there are no real slots, but hypothermic rushing water, steeeep hills, Rhododendron and yes lots of mud will make you feel like you’ve been whuuped by the Griner Brothers. Don

There are plenty of nice “canyon” hikes in the southeast, try overflow creek in Georgia, any of the Jocassee Georges in NC/SC, Upper Chatagoe (NC, SC, GA), or Linville in NC. All are very steep and most are rugged. Although you do not have to worry about getting through tight squeezes, just climbing through a rhododendron thicket on a 70-80 degree slope as you bypass a waterfall.
