What a beautiful weekend it was–the last lovely weather of the year, I suspect. John D., Carol P. and I hit the Roost for a few lesser-known canyons, plus Chambers, one of my absolute favorites.
Day One was East Fork of Pasture and West Fork of Bull. Since I have barely heard of these canyons I wasn’t expecting much–but they were both really fun and lovely. I’d recommend them. Although we kicked ourselves for not having brought the gear to also do the very short Pothole Fork, which would have been a perfect finish. You could easily do these three in even a shortened sunlight day.
Day Two was Chambers. I just love this canyon. While Pasture and Bull held a lot of water, Chambers showed only a few inches in places. Then we finished with the West Fork of White Roost, which based on the trail in gets plenty of traffic, but still is a fun canyon with some really nice skinny sections.
Finally, I discovered something to do when I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t sleep. I took our my Droid and surveyed the sky using the Google Sky Map. Since I only know about three constellations, it was very cool to be able to identify all of them, as well as the planets, especially with a clear sky and new moon.

There are also “Cowboy Steps” in Angel Cove Canyon, across the Dirty Devil River.

Ram, > Kelsey calls them “Cowboy Steps”. Canyon left right at east/west Pasture junction. Looks like they were chipped with some metal tool, quite a while ago. Not really needed, but maybe a handy step in a spot or two? All pics before the exit/steps one (dark stuff) is Pasture, after is WF Bull. > -john

Big John, thank you for the distraction. Thanks very much. Where are those huge cut steps and any guesses or knowledge on their history? The deep dark stuff (no wetsuit Bill?) looks really cool. Was that Pasture or WF Bull? Chambers looks awesome as always. Does look like it scoured a tad under the final drop out.

Warm sunshine, no wind (!), golden cottonwoods… just nice.

I observed all the warm weather here and hoped my friends were taking advantage of it out in desert!! I have not done the West Fork of Bull, although I have been around the system a bit. It seemed that the confluences of forks is always special and the rest OK. What was the canyon like? I did East Fork Pasture years ago and it is quite pretty with some fun downclimbs and captures. Chambers rocks! Thanks for the report. Got me smiling. Pictures? See ya FreezeFest, I expect 😉
