ROPES: Dumb Newbie Question?

I got 2 new 10.2mm dry ropes from Santa and I was out trying them out on a small cliff nearby…anyway…I noticed they are a lot more slippery than the ones I rented in Zion last summer. Much harder to control the decent. Is there something I’m supposed to do to them before using them? Washing…something?

I found the Petzl catalog helpful. I think it is also on line. Throughout and in the back of the book are helpful drawings of how to use the Pirana and other equipment. Still, having someone show you who knows is better. Practice with a new device first on little stuff like a tree limb or in a climbing gym. Of course have spotters and belays. Bad to practice on Rap #1 in Englestead. (no personal experience here but I have always been nervous with folks who show up to do canyons with new equipment they have never tried. How do I know this you might ask? Easy, they tell you and show you the shiny new device. They then fumble around with it then break out into a sweat on the edge of the first rap. They then say things like “well we’ll see what this thing does” —comforting) Scott Card

There are many ways to ‘load’ a Pirana descending device but I am surprised about how little information there is about proper use out there. It seems only those who have used the device regularly and have been taught all the various use methods really understand all the options. Let me know, maybe I can snap you some digi pictures and help out w/ideas. If your not doing lots of wet canyons consider the Omega Pacific SBG 2. This is a great device for under $18.

I use a Petzl Pirana and weigh around 220#. I have only rappelled using two strands. I don’t have alot of esperience with this having only done Keyhole and Pine Creek plus another canyon in a class with Zion Adventure Co.

What Koen said …. curious, are your ropes static or dynamic?

That’s normal. The rope fibers are “lubricated” for processing and weaving. Dunking the rope overnight in a bathtub helps. Leaving the tap running helps more. It washes/rinses the film off and leaves the rope less slippery. Or just use it, the film wears off fast.

Most static rope should be soaked & dried anyway before first use to let the rope “crimp” to prevent sheat slippage.

Happy and safe descents in 2006,

    Koen
