Ropes Stolen from Emerald Pools / Heaps

A group was surprised this weekend to find their 300′ rope, stashed in the rocks below the last rap in Heaps, and well above the areas frequented by tourists, was GONE! The group, including Salt Laker Bonnie Davis, completed the canyon in three days, doing the final rappel on Monday, September 5th. All members of the party passed a knot on the way down, and they left a rope hanging on the rap.

The rope was tucked in a duffle bag and well-hidden in the poison-ivy infested talus, with rocks on top and a note. Members of the party were perplexed. The incident was reported to the Backcountry Desk, but no report of “found” ropes had been made.

Also of note, the piece of carpet placed by a previous party to protect from abrasion at the lip was no longer there. Canyoneers are advised to use extreme caution in placing and protecting their rope on this long and exposed rappel.

May bad karma await the (word I can’t type here) person or people who swiped that rope. It’s a sad world we live in some days.
