Anybody think this is a nice 5 day backpack off of hole in the rock road? I’m envisioning going up Stevens for two days and then dayhiking beyond from a basecamp.
Any thoughts on that?

We tried a similar hike in the fall of 2009 and one important issue to consider is water availability.
There’s water in Escalante and generally in the canyons on the west side, but the east side seems drier. We were thinking to try and go up one of these (can’t remember which, Hydra/Beryl/Ichabod), and it was dry and choked with rubble near Escalante. So we figured there’s no water higher up and turned around (via Fools) and did something else later (Llewelyn/Cottonwood).
So the thing I learned is to listen more closely to Steve Allen and pay attention to what he says about water.

I have done Steven’s canyon by way of crack in the wall several times at precisely this time of year. It is typically delightful. There is a wonderful campsite on the Escalante directly under Stevens arch, about a mile downstream from Stevens canyon. The temp, in absence of large storms, should be comfortable. Wading upstream in the Escalante could be a challenge, it could be running from 100-200 cfs. It is a beautiful area with coyote gulch and willow > /fortymile gulch as nearby options.
