What are people’s take on Tiblocs vs. a prusik? I keep eyeing those Tiblocs and they sure look nice to include for emergencies – I’m just not sure how well they work on an 8mm line, nor how easy they are to set up and use. When putting in your 2 cents, keep in mind I’m just looking to purchase something that would rarely be used…just emergency assents…Thanks for any feedback.

It’s hard to argue with the value of a simple prussic. Great value and very effective.
However, Tiblocs work great too. The complaints people have with the Tibloc are easily overcome with a little understanding about how they work. I most commonly use Tiblocs on 8mm to 9mm diameter ropes with Petzl Attache or William carabiners. The Trango large HMS works well too. All these ‘biners use large diameter bar stock in their frames and so combine well with the Tibloc on 8mm to 9mm diameter ropes. You will want to use carabiners with smaller diameter bar stock frames when climbing ropes larger than 9mm.
Tiblocs can damage a rope sheath if they are not seated properly before weighting. After sliding the Tibloc up the rope “seat” the teeth into the rope sheath by pulling down with your hand before applying body weight. Sheath damage occurs when the Tibloc is weighted before the teeth are engaged allowing it to slide down the rope before catching. Those teeth are really sharp.
The large frame “pear” shaped ‘biners most suitable for use with the Tibloc double as nice “handles”. Almost like using handled ascenders.
I would encourage you to try out a friends Tiblocs if possible to see what I’m talking about. Then if you like ’em. Buy ’em.

Mark, My limited use of ascenders has brought me to this conclusion: One of each, The Prusik for the top end. 2 reasons. A) The Tibloc weighs less and B) the Prusik is less brutal on the hand. Interested to hear other thoughts from the more experienced.

I have used 2 tiblocs to ascend a single 8mm Canyon Pro, one hooked to the harness loop, and one up the rope for foot loops. Rounded x-section beaners grab better(see Petzl info). This setup works fine for a single rope… but be sure that the tiblocs ‘catch-lock’ onto the rope… otherwise they can slip a bit and tear the sheath. —– Original Message —– From: dgoldstein@dimensionfunding.com To: Yahoo Canyons Group Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2004 12:30 PM Subject: RE: [from Canyons Group] TECH~Ascenders

Tibloc: expensive, fussy as to rope/biner size, can eat sheath unless care is used, works only on a single rope, requires an extra biner per ascender, look really cool, chicks love them when you’re clanking around the bar after a trip.
Prusik: cheap, work on any rope diameter, easy on the rope, will work on double ropes if sized properly, lighter system weight, can be used as a sling, definitely uncool looking, chicks hate them.
I bought a pair, never ever carry them. If you want to buy mine, I’ll sell them cheap.

I’ve found that Tiblocs work only on a certain range of rope and carabiner sizes. Better find out which sizes before the next emergency. In general I don’t like Tiblocs. Another issue is, climbing one rope or two? You can wrap a prusik around either one or two ropes. A two rope ascent on Tiblocs would be very awkward, at least as far as I can see.
