I believe that I am now ready to give my rope its first bath. From all the experts in this group… what is the best way to clean a rope? I have a 220′ 9.5mm static line (nuthin’ fancy). Let me get some of your input on which method is best.
Thanks, Brandon Chambers plaidfro@hotmail.com

My top loadin’ washin’ machine has a snug fit between the spindle and the bottom floor. I just lay in the rope, toss in some soap (Blue Water’s rope soap) and run it about 3 times, addin’ the soap only on the second cycle.
Amazing how clean they get. Super.
Then, air dry. Good to go.

When I worked at BlueWater we suggested the following procedure for “washing” a rope.
Dress your rope into a stable coil. Either a classic mountaineers coil or you can also chain it like 1″ webbing. (You do this so the rope doesn’t get all tangled up in the wash). Put the rope in a pillow case or some kind of cotton or mesh bag. Wash the rope in a front loading washing machine (no top loaders) in cold water with Woolite or any mild soap, no detergent! After the machine has completely run through the cycle, do it again with no soap so all residue gets rinsed out of the rope. Air dry in a well ventilated area out of direct sunlight. You can add some fabric softener in the second washing if you like. This helps the rope from getting too stiff.
This process is very time consuming and is a lot of work so, that said.
I use Mike’s method.

Brandon,
Take it down a wet canyon. Your rope will never be cleaner. Never fails.
