You don’t need to rap next to the long slope at all following The route down the other side of Pywiack (airplane gully, to the right of the falls) is fairly straightforward and easy, and the brush isn’t so bad if you hug the side of the rock. I’ve tried various routes past Pywiack since first doing the canyon 30 years ago, and I prefer it. It also has the added historical benefit of the remains (huge radial engine) of a Navy aircraft that crashed in 1959. Threee planes were flying up Tenaya Canyon at low altitude, with clouds near the rim – one tried to fly under the clouds and didn’t make it. – Jef
Brennen’s route where you are not going right down by the falls.
If you’re a more talented downclimber than me you might not have to rap at all anywhere in the Inner Gorge either although I’ve not done it myself. Almost everyone will want a rope though.
The walk out is awful. Makes me want to go back up.

Since first doing the canyon 30 years ago? You’re my age aren’t ya? Were you like 10 when you did it?
Uh…..I think I’m about 5 years older (and wiser) than you. But, maybe not….doing the math with the numers above, if you think I was 10 thirty years ago, and we were the same age, that makes you 40. So, I have to conclude that I’m actually quite a bit older (and wiser) than you. I was 25 in ’82 when I first did Tenaya, so my mistake..not so long ago.
I’ve been wanting to do this canyon for awhile. Do you know Jef at what time of year it becomes unfeasible due to weather?
Should be ok up until the Tioga Pass road closes, whenever that is.
~PS: there are a couple airplane wrecks in the mountains out near Death valley. A hellcat near Pinto Peak (engine, landing gear, and various scattered remnants), and an Albatross (full fuselage and wings on this one) near Towns Pass. Pretty cool to find this stuff.
Yeah, it is. I find it especially interesting to research the details. – Jef

My daughters did their first canyons (Birch Hollow & Pine Creek) at 10 & 12.
