The Scariest Pothole Ever?

I’ve had a handful of requests from people to publish some video of this pothole. The pit of despair in Poe gets a lot of play as one of the scariest and difficult potholes to defeat, but as far as the most terrifying to look at, it has to be the Wart which is even farther downcanyon.

This clip was shot in 2009, on an original GoPro (not HD). So excuse the poor quality. You can see me going onto a guided rappel, and transitioning to a tyrolean traverse to cross the gaper. What you don’t see is how we solved the thing. It’s not particularly difficult once you figure it all out, but I won’t explain the solution here, for those who don’t want the paint by numbers on this particular obstacle.

I think the kids call that a “keeper.”

  • certainly depends on water level. it is hard to guess at what it is in this video, but i would’ve guessed it’s in the 20-30 foot depth range. granted, the only good look i got at it was when i flipped over on this traverse and stared into the beast with that gopro on, so my estimate could certainly be way off.

i’ve crossed the wart as well – will never do it again.

The pit of despair is 26 feet deep. I think this one is only about 20, but this one has a spot, part way down, where it is overhung on all 360 degrees of the thing, so it feels and looks more foreboding

I agree; that one is a good one too. I’ve now gone over it using the wart, across it using a tyrol like you, and through it using batman/ascenders. Would love to compare notes on what method you prefer and how you did the setup, if you want to PM me. (So we don’t spoil the challenge for others…)
