TR- A Pleasant Surprise and Gruesome Discovery….

I set off for a stroll up Pleasant Creek from the Notom Road yesterday, but about half way through the “Reef” became side-tracked when I saw a beautiful looking slot entering from the South. I had noticed this possible slot on the Golden Throne quad before and even highlighted it for exploration. On the map it looks like getting to the top of the canyon would be a problem, but I wanted to check it out from the bottom anyway. It turned out to be a beautiful slot that easily “goes” all the way to the top. Some mild stemming and “rim-a-neering” let us avoid the muddy detritus filled potholes and more difficult climbing moves. One move was unavoidable, but there was a handy sling around the boulder to assist in the climb. I hadn’t expected to be able to get as far up the canyon as we did, and the canyon far exceeded any expectations I had of how beautiful it might be. I’ll have to go back when I have more time and see if there’s a way to connect the upper end of “Pleasant Surprise” (what I’m calling the canyon for lack of knowing what it’s name could be… anyone know?) and the upper end of Pleasant Creek for a nice loop hike. The adventure was made especially exciting yesterday too by our discovery of a Big Horn Sheep head! Check it out in the “Pleasant Surprise and Gruesome Discovery” photo album. -Malia
