Did Fat Man’s over the weekend during a short break in the rain. All the drainages in the area were flowing (a trickle), and all of the narrows were full of cold water. Anchors were in OK shape, though one piece of green webbing in particular was ratty just above the confluence. I tied out the worn section, and we rapped on it (because the deadman it was on was solid, and difficult to rethread the webbing). I was ok with a shorty over a 1 mm farmer (triathlon style), though I was happy to sit in the sun at the base of the aspen tree before the exit. East fork of the Virgin was ripping at 250 CFS +/- (generally mid thigh to waist deep), and was barely manageable between Fat Man’s and the traditional exit. I wouldn’t recommend that way with current flows, except to strong swimmers. Defensive position was a must, and still didn’t escape all the tail bone reamers. We found a handline useful to our party of 3 in a few exceptionally swift sections. We opted out of visiting the falls on this trip. PFD’s would be useful with current flows I think. The crack/fin exit at the mouth of Fat Man’s was still accessible.
