Went to the Roost last weekend. Other than a hideous amount of wind (esp. Sat. nite), was quite delightful. Did NotMindbender with Paul Schmidt on Saturday. A few wades to the shins, one short pool just tickled the tender bits. Anchors solid and well positioned. Moki exit – probably won’t wear the pack on that next time. Leisurely pace, about 7 hours with no shuttle.
Ran into Ryan Cornia, Penny Martens, and Kent Beverly saturday afternoon. Ryan took off; the rest suffered the wind. Real glad I wasn’t in a tent. Sunday, the four of us did Bull Pasture Canyon. Short, very pleasant. I wasn’t expecting much, and was very pleased at how varied and enjoyable it was. First rap was set up 30 feet back from the edge. Seemed silly. Slotted a chockstone with a sling and rapide, 50 feet to bottom (2 stage). Second rap at the end of the canyon was off a tree 40 feet back. Previous parties had the descending rings 3 feet back from the lip, deep grooves already incised into the sandstone. Come on, folks, we can do better. I extended the rings over the lip. Start is still reasonable, there is a groove you step down into a chimney stance before weighting rope. Current setup is single strand 1 inch tubular webbing. With stretch, it will wear fast in the incised groove, and should probably be replaced with a loop to reduce stretch. One handline down a fifteen foot drop, and it’s over. Hike out is interesting, but one wonders why someone wasted so much dynamite putting in a fairly useless (and now closed) road. On the road just after 2 to go our separate ways. Drove the dirt to Green River, saw purple water, sand dunes, and other delights, and came out right at Ray’s. Hard to beat.

Thanx Rob. brought back memeories. When our group went, the Tylers and Aaron reascended the canyon, from the top of the 3rd rappel. They had a wonderful time. They used shoulder stands, pack tosses and a pair of 12 year old guns, climbing hard. They buzzed about it for days. Judy, Amy (8 at the time) and I climbed up to the slickrock to the west, at the top of the 3rd rap. We traversed south around the nose and intersected the road coming up from lower Larry. Short and fun slickrock slabbing. On the nose, we spied a fast dropping, smallish canyon, heading south. We were pretending to be in unexplored country. Amy named this canyon after herself and can still find it on Topo Utah. Both of these ways out (Up canyon or our traverse, are quite nice and shortens the day and altitiude gain versus the long way around, below the third rap. Good “getaway Day” fodder. Fun!! R
