DP and PMM joined ERG at CR for a few newly listed canyons in MRK’s TSCGCP 2ed. After discussing needed gear over breakfast, we decided to drive to RWTH and head cross-country to DF-CG even though we never did figure out what a PR was as recommended in the guide (Ed note: PMM has since learned the use of PRs is discussed on pg 8). We were pretty sure none of us had one, though. Our gear included RG, 1 rope 18.29m and a pull cord of 24.38m, W&R/QL, DP & PMM had K&EPs while ERG opted for KE&APs despite the heat. We used a map and GPS for navigation rather than the suggested M&C. We also substituted a pot shot (ICGPS) for the G-pick and ibis hook. At the DF-CG we headed generally N on the E side of SE arriving at SEWB after crossing SEEB. R1 was dispatched with the speed it took to fill the ICGPS with sand. ERG HL’d while the rest rapped. R2 was just as easy using the same sand in the same ICGPS even though there was plenty good sand at R2. With a couple DCs through some PHs we found ourselves in the slot. The sun was putting out more BTUs than a pizza oven. ERG laid in a small PH and soaked in the H20. The slot itself was fun with exposure that didn’t feel too threatening, at least not to PMM. Long before the confluence of the WB and the EB, DP and PMM decided that they had had enough broiling and wanted out ASAP. We UC’d to the W at the first exit and sat in the shade until our temps returned to normal. After a short hike along the rim, we were back at the DF-CG where ERG had left an L of H20 to drink and/or soak our shirts for the hike back to RWTH. Despite the fun fodder provided by the quirks of the book, it is great to have new canyons to explore and this is one of them. Penny

Thanks, Mark, for providing the key to the code on page 5. People who haven’t spent some time in the pages of Kelsey’s new book, might not fully get the nuance of the spoof. Eric, Dave, and I have had great fun, and little success, in trying to talk Kelsey speak. For a more understandable TR, check out Eric’s post from a couple weeks ago. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canyons/message/47465 Penny
