We did Burro, Cottonwood, and Five-Mile in Capitol Reef National Park over the Memorial Day weekend. We started at the top of the Waterpocket Fold and did the car-shuttles.
Burro: No swimming, just some waist deep wading. The anchor for the big rappel consisted of two bolts. One of the bolts looked old and rusty. We rappelled off of the equalized setup and it was okay. The rest of the anchors were fine.
Cottonwood: Had one cold pool swim at the end. We did not need wetsuits. The rappel anchors were fine.
Five-Mile: For the entrance to Five-Mile, make sure to climb up to the left of the jug shaped dome that is on the ridge of towers north-east of Buck Point on the top of the Waterpocket Fold. There were 2-3 short cold pool swims between the Box-Elder tree rappel 1 and the chokestone rappel 2. There were 2 cold pool swims at the end at rappel 3. You rappel into a pool at rappel 3, but you could stand at the disconnect and so a floating disconnect was not required. We all brought wetsuits, but only about half of the group actually wore them. We did the rappel at the Box-Elder rappel, but this could be downclimbed with some help. There was no pool at rappel 2, it was completely dry. The rap is a little difficult over the chokestone, and one member of our group flipped over, so be careful and apply a firemans belay. The webbing at rappel 3 into the pool was a little old so we backed it up with some cord.
We really enjoyed Five-Mile and Burro. Cottonwood was nice, but not as good as those two.
Have fun, Rom
