We did a trip last friday.  We were expecting to see and smell the elk but alas we rapped into Russel Gulch instead of Das Boot.  We were meeting a group in the subway so it actually worked out fine.  The rappels were great.  Wearing a wetsuit was overkill as there wasn’t much water in russel gulch.  All and all it was a great day. We had a permit for Behunin Saturday but it rained and we called it off.  We hiked the navajo loop in bryce canyon instead.  — On Tue, 8/10/10, Shaun trackrunner83@yahoo.com> wrote:

It was alive and still attacking canyoneers on 7-9-2010. I would love to hear that TR. If someone knows who it is, or the individual(s) is a member here please post! If too embarrassed email it to RAM and have him post anonymously for you. I would be willing to post anonymously for you too.
I bet it goes something like this: “After pulling our ropes from the entry rappel we continued to the next rappel when we encountered a very pissed off and trapped bull elk. It was at this time I remembered the saying: ‘I don’t have to out run a bear (in this case bull elk). I just have to out run my partner.’ Thanks for taking one for the team Billy. Sadly Billy and I are no longer canyon partners.”
The bull elk died sometime on 7-13-10. Someone heard rangers went ready with rifle to put him out of his misery. It appears it was not shot. As Tom posted on Bogley, his sources claim the rangers were real men and strangled the beast with their bare hands. Personally I would think Atlas gloves would provide better grip but YMMV.
And in case you are thinking you can score a trophy rack, you can’t. The rangers cut most of the rack off and probably sold it as a natural cure.
Let this be a lesson to you that don’t have the technical skills and think you can poach a canyon in Zion(s).
shadyurl link to a TR of the new meat anchor. WARNING sleeping elk pictures.
(I wish I could take credit for all of the jokes but I can’t)

Stepping over a decaying carcass of one of nature’s majestic creatures is just part of the overall canyoneering experience…
