Can anyone enlighten me as to the best insulative method for doubling up on wet suits? Shorty over or under full suit and why.

Achieving tightness (good seal) is most important. I have always put the shorty/vest/shorts whatever under the ‘full’ suit. Just one man’s opinion – Neil
PS – Like Charly, the only time I have doubled up I knew it was going to be really cold and removing layers except ‘after’ the cold event has never really been an issue.

Whenever I’ve had the occasion to “double up” the water has been cold enough to not even consider peeling off one of the wetsuits (blue lips and uncontrollable shivering). That said, as Tom recommends I found the shorty underneath worked pretty well. Seals things up pretty good.
When I want the ability to adjust layers I wear a farmer john with a jacket. The farmer john is great for wading long stretches and shallow pot holes. The jacket can easily be added for the swims and cold dark sections.

Well, you might get too warm in your wet suit, particularly on top in a canyoneering situation. For that reason it’s most convenient to layer the shorty on top so you can peel it off.

Bummer. I thought the e-group was getting fun again. When I first spied this post, I thought Dave was looking for “Wetsuit Psychics” Oh well…….
Since when is a long wetsuit cooler than a short one? I’d rather peel off the long one and be left with the short one when hot…..Makes more sense to me! hehehe

I’d say, whichever way is going to give you the tightest fit. Seems like the double wetsuit works well because very little water gets down to skin level, kinda almost wetsuit/drysuit style.
