Winter Canyon Ideas Northern AZ / Southern UT

Looking for some dry canyon ideas for this winter.

Our group lives in the Sedona / Flagstaff area. Willing to camp when the weather allows but wondering what might be in the 2-3 hour driving range?

We are 6.5 hrs away from Hanksville so we plan to hit Lep and Main Fork for a few days at some point.

Any suggestions for closer canyons?

Thx.

Actually, I should add that there are another dozen (or more) slots in the corridor area off the South Rim that are Winter accessible off S. Kaibab, Bright Angel, Grandview or Hermit trails. Some can be day hiked and others would require an overnight backpack.

Todd’s other book covers some nice Winter options in and around the Superstition Mountains and a few other lower elevation places.

There are 10 slots in the upper Marble Canyon area suitable for easy day hikes. There are 4 slots that are good for BIG day hikes on the Navajo res that empty into the LCR or GC (Waterhole … not to be confused with Waterholes, Big Canyon, Salt Trail Canyon, Shinumo Wash)

Then are a half dozen really great slots in middle and lower Marble suitable for an overnight backpack (or two). Several of these are the best in the area IMO. I’ve done them all in Winter, but you’ll need to dodge storms and be sure the road conditions are suitable. You’ll see them all in Todd’s book.

The Grand Canyoneering book is on it’s way. Marble Canyon, anything aside from Waterholes? It’s close enough for a 2-3 day trip.

  • I think Mable Canyon stuff is ideal, if maybe a bit more of a 2-3 hour drive? Not sure. Badger, Sevenmile, Cathedral are just a few. Other options are listed in Todd’s other guidebook found here http://canyoneeringusa.com/shop/home.php?cat=108 Looking through it now I see several A (dry) canyons listed among the more plentiful “B” (wet) routes in the book.
