Has anyone been down Woody canyon this year? I was thinking about going next week, and would like to know the water levels in the potholes.

Are you camped around the area the night before or after? We are going to be quite nearby. We can stop in and say hi. R

Hi Richard
Technically I have not been in there this year. We were there last December 31st. ๐
It has been a dry year so far, so it is likely on the low side water wise. The last keeper, which looks very intimidating, has a small slanted ledge, on the exit and can be climbed out solo or with some help. A tossed bag makes it easy. From the few visits I have made through the canyon, the impression I get is that low water makes ENTERING into potholes the challenge. Makes those drops a little further, out into the ankle busting zone. This requires additional teamwork for the necessary “captures” of the last man. The first folks can go on rope, rap or hand line in. It is really nice to have a very good downclimber. It is really nice to have a tall and strong fella to capture folks. Really nice to have a creative fella with rope systems. I recommend having a few potshots, that can be dragged, by the last man, making the downclimbs much easier.
When are you going? let us know what you find and how it went for you

Yeah, I would agree that it is probably on the dry side. Maybe something like 4-6 short knee-deep wades and a short swim at the last keeper. If you’re going to try to toss a bag or pack to get out, it is nice to know that you can swim up to the climb-out, wedge yourself between the walls, and toss from the water. Have fun… Dave
