Perhaps part of the problem is that some non-ACA persons make a statement and then are quickly questioned/insulted/criticized? In particular, this seems quite childish to the general community regarding the bitterness running around. As opposed to an understanding that people are approaching canyoning from different environs?
That said, the ACA teaches canyoneering specific techniques and I cant see any argument against that. That is likely what the NPS is seeing. The canyoneers are the one that deserve the lion’s share of credit, whether they credit anyone else is up to them. I think more often than not, a lot feel for those that were involved in accidents.
