Zion Fees, Ranger Encounters – LETTERS are a waste

Any critical (constructive criticism of course) email or letter I have sent to the Park Service is responded to in one of two ways;

“Thanks for your email but that’s just the way things are…”

“Thanks for your letter. In response, here is a form letter letting you know we really don’t care to listen or respond. Sincerely, Secretary of so-and-so.”

    This is absolutely correct. When Cindy Purcell spoke at the ACA Zion Rendezvous last April she explained this and mentioned that the majority of feedback they had gotten to date was positive and that as far as they were aware, they system was working. Clearly, not enough people from our group have been communicating with her about negative encounters and problems with the system.

    Cindy is a great person and very willing to listen to our comments. But she can’t read our minds. It is up to us to give the park feedback. And by the way, letters describing negative encounters and expressing concern about the problems with the current system don’t have to be inflammatory. Negative criticism can be given in a positive way. No harm in being civil.

    You catch more fly’s with honey…

    Jeez, Wade, such a cynic at an early age…

    Yes, but. Sending letters to Cindy is sending them to an actual person who’s opinions are VERY IMPORTANT to the development of the backcountry management plan. And who has stated that she wants to hear from people.

    So send in your letters, people, even Wade.
