Day 3 of non-stop rain in Zion. Some might consider that a downer for their vacation plans, but my family is well-prepared and we had a blast today. We hit Emerald Pools for a leisurely hike with my 3yo daughter. She was a real trooper marching a long! The middle falls were flowing pretty strong, but when the rain picked up, things got crazy. The upper falls out of Heaps (Hepes) was INTENSE. Probably about 5 times stronger when I saw it during the spring runoff in April. You couldn’t even get close to upper Emerald Pools. The falls were blinding with waves of mist crashing up at all of the hikers. I got off a few shots but my camera was soaked and fogged. The smell was also intense–that stagnant pool canyoneering smell–like every stinky pool in Heaps was being flushed clean this afternoon.
Back down to the middle falls, we realized were were trapped with about 20 other hikers; the flow from Heaps blocking one side; the flow from Behunin blocking the other side. We had a blast just hanging out in the rain watching the flood. I got several good shots of the river that was now washing out the trail. Several hikers coming up from the loop under Lady Mountain were denied access. After about 45 minutes of hang time, we were able to wade through the Behunin flow and we made our way down the Kayenta Trail.
So Heaps flashed beyond belief, Behunin had good flow and a few waterfalls were springing out of the east walls as well. The Narrows are flowing way high and dirty. I hope that anybody in the canyons is safe and hunkered down. The rain is still going and it looks like we have 1-2 more days of it. I have never seen this much constant rain in Zion before! -Joe

Generally you guys get our weather and I can tell you it has been sprinkling all day – now it is pouring and there is no end in sight.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation Joe!
